living in a color coded world.

Look out, I'm going to get a little serious on you guys!

When I was a kid I was label as different or “special.” At a very young age I was ‘diagnosed’ with a learning disability. I struggled with reading, writing, achromatic and pretty much anything that had to do with school.

Wikipedia says:

Dyslexia is a broad term defining a learning disability that impairs a person's fluency or comprehension accuracy in being able to read, speak, and spell, and which can manifest itself as a difficulty with phonological awareness, phonological decoding, orthographic coding, auditory short-term memory, and/or rapid naming. Dyslexia is separate and distinct from reading difficulties resulting from other causes, such as a non-neurological deficiency with vision or hearing, or from poor or inadequate reading instruction.

It pretty much means a person with dyslexia has problems reading and comprehending symbols such as letters and numbers. When I was in elementary school and we were just learning to write and read if you held my hand written name up to a mirror you could actually read it better. Twenty some years ago they didn’t know what to do with a kid like me, so I got jammed into the “Special Education” classes. I did need extra help, that was for sure, but not the way they thought. The classes made me very lazy and it took a long time for me to finally understand how to read and write. My parents were lost as well. Thankfully they hired a wonderful home tutor to help me get through my struggles.

I have a lot of difficulties getting through elementary and middle school, suddenly in high school something clicked in my brain. I pretty much taught myself strategies for reading and writing that worked for me. Most of my teachers from grade school told my parents that they didn’t believe I would make it through high school. I made sure to prove them wrong. I graduate with honors with a 3.8 grade point average. I had made it.

Color coding seriously has saved my learning ability. I didn’t realize it until years later but I used to use multi colored high lighters for everything I was learning. If I was in a play my script was covered in marker and colors. My eyes could focus better of the colors then it could the words and it helped my brain process the information. In the past few years I’ve talked to parents of children with the same problem as me, and they also use color coding to help get through their studies.

I do sometimes worry that Aurora will have the same struggles as me. I remember it being very difficult and painful, I watched as my friends learned in school and I couldn’t. I was bullied with the best of them, called names, shoved into lockers, even pushed down a flight of stairs. It’s a hard reality but sometimes kids just don’t understand. I’m just thankful I went through it, and have learned from it so I can teach Aurora, or the new little one, how to handle learning a little bit better. There are also different levels of the learning disability; some people need a little help, some a lot. Just like everything else, each case is different for every person.

Some people think that people with learning disabilities are stupid and slow. I have found this to be the complete opposite of the truth. Most of them have better knowledge and interesting things to say than any other “normal” person I’ve meet. Is it because they have to work harder to gain the information they know? I have no idea. I wear my dyslexia on my sleeve as a proud badge of honor. I used to be completely illiterate, but now I’m working my way through college and enjoying writing and blogging as much as I can. It might take me longer to do things than others, but it doesn’t mean I can’t, it just means I get to work harder as something I love to do.

first offical custom order.

I created, packaged, and sent my very first custom order. I’ve made custom items for my friends and family before, but never for someone I’ve just meet. I was really excited about the whole thing. This awesome young man was at First Friday while I was set up outside of the Butter Toast Boutique and commented that he liked my button necklaces. He just wished the chains were longer and the pieces were larger. I assured him it would be no problem for me to make him exactly what he wanted.

This was defiantly a learning experience for me. Although I was kind of stressed out about making sure it was what he wanted it was fun to make something with someone in mind. I could picture in my head what he would look like wearing it, and it made it a little simpler to make. I also learned that I totally under charged for the piece. I am not going to make a big deal about it at all. I’ve never made a piece like it before so I was unsure of the cost of materials, lesson learned! Next time I’ll know better.

For some reason I had a lot of trouble taking a decent picture of this lovely necklace. I probably should have waited for better lighting.

I’m really happy with the way it came out. His idea was great and I’m so glad I could create it for him. It’s nice to sort of “collaborate” with other creative people ever once in a while.

Etsy Shop Grand Opening!

The moment is finally here. My Etsy shop is finally open and I have listed my first offical items. I'm excited for the future of this shop. The floral hair clips and pins are just the beginning. I can't wait to share the rest of my ideas and items with everyone!

Thanks everyone for your support and smiling a nodding through all of my talk about opening this shop. It's been a long time coming and I don't expect it to be a success over night I'm just extremely excited I finally got over my anxiety and opened up shop!

So, now that I'm open, what do you think? You know how I feel about feedback! The more the marrier!

Have a great day everyone, thanks again!

wishlist.

I’m not really a person that buys a lot of stuff. If I do get a few extra dollars I usually spend it on crafty supplies or taking my daughter to lunch. Sometimes I really want to splurge on myself though! There are so many amazing things out there that I’ve had my eye on and dreamed of longingly.

This lovely little camera necklace from afterninetofive I think is going to be my celebration present for when I make my first Etsy sale. I have to reward myself for a job well done right? ^_~

I have had my eye on this Hanson shirt since I saw it at the last concert I went too. If you didn’t know Taylor is a pretty darn good photographer, hence the camera. Not to mention it’s my favorite color!

I’ve been attempting and failing to play the guitar for years now. I thought maybe starting out smaller would be easier. I think playing the ukulele would be awesome! It’s travel size and I could bring it anywhere with me!

One of Jo Totes camera bags? Hm, YES! and PLEASE!!!

Since I bought my first vintage camera I’ve been wanting to get my hands on an instant Polaroid one. I love everything about Polaroid’s! I wouldn’t even care if it was a really ugly camera, as long as it still worked!

The last thing on my list has been on my mind for some time. I’ve been dabbling in Digital Painting for a little while and well, I’m horrible at it, but I love to do it. I would love, love, love A Bamboo pad! I think this would make doodling so much fun and easy! I have so many ideas for digital illustrations in my sketchbook just waiting to get on my computer screen.

That’s about it. If I ever stop spending my money and save it maybe I’ll fulfill my wish list. Yeah, maybe someday!

What’s on your wish list?

First Friday Success!

I hope I don't drive everyone completely crazy with my posts about my new little adventure, but I can't help it. Last night I got to set up my little table infront of Butter Toast Boutique once again for Phoenix First Friday. I was a little concerned at first, one major reason was I compeletly didn't think about bring light! Duh Kat, it's night time, meaning DARK! Oops. Thankfully Traci had some string lights in her car and and between everyone we made it work. The lovely ladies of Vulpine Collective even let me borrow a lamp! I'm so thankful for that.

It was a slow start, not going to lie, but it really pick up towards the end of the night. I don't know why it was so surprizing to me that there were so many people out at 10:00pm on a Friday. I really am getting old! I learned a lot during the night. Things that I thought would never sell, people loved, and stuff I thought would fly, sat on the table untouched. I get pretty nervous about actually selling stuff, but I'll get there. You'd think after working retail for over ten years I'd have this down.

I have so many new ideas spinning around in my head and I'm trying to stay focused and not get ahead of myself. I woke up super early this morning for no good reason and lay awake thinking of all the things I want to create, it made my head spin.

Thanks to everyone who came by the Butter Toast Boutique last night! I loved talking to everyone, and I meet some really awesome people. I hope to see you all in the future!

Oh, and again, special thanks to the ladies of Butter Toast! Traci rocked it last night and the beautiful young lady (I didn't catch her name >.<) working in the shop last night really did a great job with the extra traffic from us crazy outside vendors! You all are sweet hearts, thanks for being so supportive of this newbie!

I know I keep talking about these events for my like "shop!" Sorry if I'm beeing annoying about it. Thanks for all of YOUR support! Seriously, everyone has been so amazingly supportive, I don't think I would have done it without you!! Lots of love guys!

and now for something completely different.

Thanks Anna!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I am a Cheeto!

If you'd like to come see me in all my Cheeto glory I'll be set up at First Friday infront of the lovely Butter Toast with some other fabulous vendors. I hope I see you there!!

Have a great weekend!!

what's on my fridge?

I’ve been thinking about doing a “what’s in my bag?”post until I realized that my purse really isn’t that interesting. Unless you want to look at diapers and Strawberry Shortcake dolls, so I thought of something different. I was standing in my kitchen and I glanced over at our refrigerator and started to laugh. We have the most random collection of stuff hanging off of it I decided to share. It probably could be worse, and funnier, but I like it just the way it is.

Sorry the photos are a little blurry, I was using my cell phone.

The freezer door.

Eat Coast or West Coast? Why? This is a conversation card from a pack we received when we got a give box from Omaha steaks from my parents. Grew up in the East but we are currently loving the West.

For those of you who don’t know this yet I worked at Starbucks for several years. Marc’s sister and brother-in-law bought this for me when we were in the Outer Banks together. It’s one of my favorite things ever.

We clipped this out of a newspaper the fall before Aurora was born and hung it on the fridge. It might be my favorite comic strip. It’s so cute!

This button has been pushed so many times it’s dyeing. Aurora thought it was so funny when she was a baby, oh memories.

The bottom on the fridge is covered with photos given to us by Marc’s mom. Aurora loves to look at them and rearrange them, I really love them too.

This is our dog Piston. He just looks like he’s being humiliated, or that he’s doing something wrong. Only Granny Pkay (Marc’s mom) would take a photo like this. I LOVE it. Sometimes "potty" humor is just really funny, I can't help it! Not that I don’t get to see this on daily bases, but the fact that there is a picture of it is priceless.

The side of the fridge isn’t as entertaining sadly.

Depressed? Over Worked? Job Suck? Unappreciated? Family Problems? Money worries? Well here is a pill for YOU! FUKITOL. When life just blows… FUKITOL!
I don’t think I need to say anything else about that one right?

Well, I showed you mine, so show me yours! What’s on your fridge?
